Duty-Free Amounts and Duty-Free Allowance

Goods intended for your own personal use/ for persons living in the same household can be brought into Austria without paying charges.

When going through customs control, you must declare the following goods; in other words, you must submit a customs declaration for:

  • goods not intended for your personal use,
  • goods obtained outside the EU which exceed the duty-free amounts for tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, medicinal products and the duty-free allowance for other goods.
  • goods that are subject to prohibitions or restrictions on imports.

The following goods are duty-free when imported in your personal luggage for your own personal use or as a gift

(Exceptions for imports from Samnaun Valley and from border traffic – see end of page)

Tobacco products (traveller must be 17 years of age or older)

200 cigarettes or
100 cigarillos or
50 cigars or
250 grams smoking tobacco or

a proportional combination of these goods.

For products of category "Tobacco for heating" (tobacco sticks), the duty-free limits in the section "Other goods" apply.

Useful Information:
When travelling via another EU Member State please consider the individual regulations for that specific EU member state.

Alcoholic beverages (traveller must be 17 years of age or older)

1 litre alcohol, distilled beverages and spirits, except non-sparkling wines and beer, with an alcohol content exceeding 22% vol. (volume percent), undenatured ethyl alcohol of 80% vol. and over or
2 litres alcohol and alcoholic beverages, except non-sparkling wines and beer,  with an alcohol content not exceeding 22% vol., or

a proportional combination of these goods

and in addition

4 litres non-sparkling wines as well as
16 litres beer

Medicine

amounts consistent with your personal needs during the trip.

Comment:
Without authorisation travellers resident in the EU are allowed to import medication to Austria they carried already with them on their departure. Import of medication bought abroad is only permitted up to an amount of three (retailer) packages each per person. 

Other Goods

with a cumulative value of EUR 430 for airline travellers or EUR 300 for all other travellers per calendar day, provided it is a non-commercial import. For travellers younger than 15 years those amounts are generally reduced to EUR 150.

Within those amounts the product group "Tobacco for heating" may not contain more than 800 tobacco sticks or, in the case of other presentation, 250 grams of tobacco. When exceeding these indicative levels, you must demonstrate that the goods really are for your personal use.

Comment:
Import prohibitions and restrictions also have to be considered when importing above mentioned duty-free goods. 

Reduced Duty-Free Amounts and Allowance in Cross-Border Traffic

The following goods are duty-free when imported in your personal luggage for your own personal use or as a gift

Tobacco Products (Traveller must be 17 Years of Age or Older)

25 cigarettes or
10 cigarillos or
5 cigars or
25 grams smoking tobacco or

 a proportional combination of these goods

Alcoholic Beverages (Traveller must be 17 Years of Age or Older)

0,25 litres  alcohol, distilled beverages and spirits, except non-sparkling wines and beer, with an alcohol content exceeding 22% vol. (volume percent), undenatured ethyl alcohol of 80% vol. and over or
0,75 litres alcohol and alcoholic beverages, except non-sparkling wines and beer, with an alcohol content not exceeding 22% vol., or

a proportional combination of these goods   

Non-sparkling Wine (Traveller must be 17 Years of Age or Older)

1 litre non-sparkling wine

Beer (Traveller must be 17 Years of Age or Older)

2 litres beer

Other Goods

Up to a cumulative value of EUR 40,

provided it is a non-commercial import. Within those amounts the product group "Tobacco for heating" may not contain more than 800 tobacco sticks or, in the case of other presentation, 250 grams of tobacco. When exceeding these indicative levels, you must demonstrate that the goods really are for your personal use.

Several travellers are not allowed to pool their allowances. It is therefore not possible for two persons, for example, to import one single item duty-free with a value of  EUR 80. You may claim the duty-free allowance once per calendar day.

Agreement on „Small“ Cross-Border Traffic

“Small” cross border traffic incorporates cross-border traffic of persons residing at the border of Austria´s neighbouring countries Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
The agreement includes further exemptions (with regard to specific food) and rights for residents at the border of those neighbouring countries. Detailed information is available at the relevant customs office.

Samnaun Valley

For tobacco products (traveller must be 17 years of age or older) educed duty-free amounts and allowances apply to cross-border traffic and entries from the Swiss Customs exclave Samnaun Valley for travellers domiciled in Austria.

40 cigarettes or
20 cigarillos or
10 cigars or
50 grams Smoking tobacco or

 a proportional combination of these goods.

When entering Austria with tobacco products obtained in Samnaun Valley via the customs offices of Pfunds, Spiss or Martinsbruck those imports are regarded as direct imports.
